Orthopedic reconstruction plate bending requires a balance between metallurgical limits and anatomical accuracy. Implants like reconstruction plates, locking compression plates (LCP), and dynamic compression plates (DCP) must be shaped during surgery to match the patient's anatomy. Using incorrect bending techniques or sub-standard tools can introduce surface scratches or micro-cracks, which increases the risk of implant fatigue and failure.
Cold working during surgery changes the internal grain structure of implant metals like 316L Stainless Steel or Grade 5 Titanium (Ti-6Al-4V). When bending an implant to match a bone profile, the outer surface undergoes tensile stress while the inner surface undergoes compressive stress.
Using well-calibrated bending irons with matching anvil profiles prevents point-loading stresses. Point-loading can exceed the plastic deformation limits of the implant, leading to micro-fissures. Our tools feature smooth radii curves that distribute force evenly across the bending points, maintaining the structural strength of the implant.

Metal-on-metal contact during bending can transfer iron particles between tools and implants. If not properly addressed, this can cause localized galvanic corrosion and compromise biocompatibility.
